What is Bio-magnification?

How Does Bio-magnification Occur?

• Consumption by Herbivores: Herbivores eat the plants, ingesting the pesticides.
• Predation: Carnivores eat the herbivores, accumulating more pesticides in their bodies.
• Top Predators: Animals at the top of the food chain, like birds of prey, have the highest pesticide concentrations.

• Reproductive Issues: Some pesticides can affect reproduction in animals, leading to population declines.

Example of Bio-magnification

DDT is a pesticide that was widely used in agriculture. It was found to accumulate in the tissues of animals, leading to thinning of eggshells in birds like eagles and pelicans, causing a decline in their populations.
