States of matter & particle nature
States of Matter & Particle Nature
What Are the States of Matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It exists in three main states: solid, liquid, and gas. Each state has distinct characteristics based on the arrangement and movement of its particles.
Characteristics of the States of Matter
- Solid: Particles are tightly packed in a fixed arrangement. Solids have a definite shape and volume.
- Liquid: Particles are close together but can move past each other. Liquids have a definite volume but take the shape of their container.
- Gas: Particles are far apart and move freely. Gases have neither a definite shape nor volume, filling any container they are in.
Particle Nature of Matter
The particle nature of matter explains that matter is made up of tiny particles that are in constant motion. This concept helps to explain the properties and behaviors of different states of matter.
Brownian Motion
Brownian motion is the random movement of particles suspended in a fluid (liquid or gas) resulting from their collision with fast-moving molecules of the fluid. This phenomenon provides evidence for the particle nature of matter.
Explaining States of Matter Using Particle Theory
- Solids: Particles vibrate in place but do not move from their fixed positions, giving solids a definite shape.
- Liquids: Particles can slide past one another, allowing liquids to flow and take the shape of their container.
- Gases: Particles move rapidly and are widely spaced, allowing gases to expand and fill their container.
Worked Example
Explain why a gas fills its container.

Visualize Particles: Imagine particles as tiny balls. In solids, they are packed tightly; in liquids, they are close but can slide; in gases, they are far apart and move freely.
Observe Around You: Notice how ice (solid) melts into water (liquid) and then evaporates into steam (gas) to see states of matter in action.
