Understanding Base-SI Units
Base-SI units are the fundamental units of measurement defined by the International System of Units (SI). These units are used to measure basic physical quantities and form the foundation for all other derived units.
The Seven Base-SI Units
- Length: Meter (m)
- Mass: Kilogram (kg)
- Time: Second (s)
- Electric Current: Ampere (A)
- Temperature: Kelvin (K)
- Amount of Substance: Mole (mol)
- Luminous Intensity: Candela (cd)
Why Are Base Units Important?
- Standardization: They provide a universal standard for measurement, ensuring consistency and accuracy worldwide.
- Foundation for Derived Units: All other units in physics are derived from these base units.
Examples of Derived Quantities
Derived quantities are formed by combining base quantities according to mathematical relationships. Here are a few examples:
- Volume: \\( \text{Volume} = \text{Length}^3 \\) with unit cubic meter (m3)
- Density: \\( \text{Density} = \frac{\text{Mass}}{\text{Volume}} \\) with unit kilogram per cubic meter (kg/m3)
- Speed: \\( \text{Speed} = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}} \\) with unit meter per second (m/s)
Worked Example
Calculate the density of an object with a mass of 10 kg and a volume of 2 m3.

Remember the Basics: Always start with the base units when solving physics problems. They are the building blocks for understanding more complex concepts.
Check Units: Ensure that your final answer has the correct units. This can help verify that your calculations are correct.
